2014 NFL Draft: Mental makeup biggest concern for Jadeveon Clowney

Former South Carolina Gamecocks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is preparing to do amazing things at the NFL combine, but one year after being viewed as a virtual lock to be the top pick in the 2014 NFL draft, that’s not the case anymore and Mike Mayock says it’s not because of his prodigious football skills.

This has been a popular refrain after a season when Clowney was accused of taking plays off and trying to protect himself from injury in order to preserve his draft stock. This led to questions about if Clowney really loved football or if he loved what comes with being a great football player, and great is what Clowney is.

Physically Clowney is the best player in the draft and has more upside than a former defensive end who went first overall–also to the Houston Texans–the question remains whether the Texans have the same concerns over his mental makeup as Mayock does.

Sounds like the NFL combine will be a perfect opportunity to put this narrative to rest.
