New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello missed Norway’s 4-0 loss to Russia on Tuesday due to a hand injury suffered earlier in the Sochi Olympics tournament. But now that his nation is out of the tournament, the focus now goes back to whether or not Zuccarello will be available for the Rangers come the time the team resumes play on February 27.
Currently, however, the Rangers are completely unclear as to the severity of his injury which could pose a problem for the teams plans, and playoff push, as the season winds down.
Zuccarello is the leading scorer with 43 points on a Rangers team in the middle of a tight battle for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Should he miss more time and be out long term, New York could be forced to make a trade to replace the production the team is sure to lose.
Of course, the first thing the Rangers need to do is find out just how bad his injury is. Until then, fans and management will just have to continue to think in terms of “what if”.
