San Diego Padres will continue to increase payroll

Guess what? If you play in the same division as the Los Angeles Dodgers, you better plan on spending some more money. You better be ready to get a little uncomfortable with the money required to stay within reach. That doesn’t even mention the fact that the San Francisco Giants have two World Series rings this decade and the Arizona Diamondbacks look to be improved once again.

Some people have the San Diego Padres listed as a dark horse team that might surprise people in 2014, but they are still on the fringe of things. Knowing the challenges of 2014 and beyond, the team has increased their payroll and team executive chairman Ron Fowler says they will continue to do so moving forward (from MLB.com):

I think it’s going to increase…There are times where it might flatten and increase again. Over time, we’ll continue to look into spend and invest in this team.”

To spend more the Padres will still have to spend wisely; teams at their payroll level ($87 million in 2014) cannot afford big mistakes. They will get their first test as they proceed with third baseman Chase Headley, whose contract expires at the end of the year.
