Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg underwent back surgery and will miss eight weeks, the team announced Friday.

Zetterberg was forced out of the Olympics in Sochi after one game and has been hampered throughout the NHL season with the back injury. As a result he has been limited to 45 of a possible 58 games for the Red Wings who have been decimated by injuries this season.

The Red Wings have had to deal with injuries to their four best players in Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen and Jimmy Howard in addition to various ailments effecting other members of the club this season.

However, the loss of Zetterberg for the next two months is a devastating blow for the Wings who find themselves in a dogfight to make the playoffs for an improbable 22nd consecutive season.

The Red Wings occupy the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference with 64 points but have five teams within three points of them for the last spot.

Despite his absence, Team Sweden is in the Gold Medal Game in Sochi where they will take on the Canadian team after they defeated Team USA 1-0 on Friday.
