UFC 170 has arrived, and the fights are just over 24 hours away. The main event will be the Women’s Bantamweight championship bout between Ronda Rousey and Sara McMann. The co-main event will be Daniel Cormier’s first bout at Light Heavyweight as he takes on Patrick Cummins.
The rest of the main card features intriguing Welterweight bouts that should not be missed. Today, I will breakdown the UFC 170 main care and tell you the good, the bad, and the GIF’s for each bout. If you missed the prelims breakdown, check it out here.
Stephen Thompson vs Robert Whitaker
The Good: If you like flashy striking, then you want to watch Stephen Thompson. A former undefeated kickboxer, Thompson has transitioned into MMA very well thus far. He is 3-1 in the UFC and is a prospect that should not be missed. Robert Whitaker, the TUF: Smashes winner, is another Welterweight prospect to watch out for. Whitaker has looked impressive in the UFC thus far, but lost his most recent bout by split decision to Court McGee.
The Bad: Nothing bad to say about this matchup, it should be a great fight.
Mike Pyle vs TJ Waldburger
The Good: Both are exciting submission specialists and know how to finish fights. Pyle has 21 finishes in 25 career victories. Waldburger has 14 finishes in 16 wins.
The Bad: This fight is not exactly monumental in the Welterweight division. Both men have their strong points, but their careers have likely hit a plateau.
Rory MacDonald vs Demian Maia
The Good: This is a great matchup between two of the Welterweight divisions best fighters. Both men were on the cusp of title contention, but recent losses sent them to the back of the line. Expect both men to come out with a renewed vigor looking to make a statement.
The Bad: Rory MacDonald’s last couple of fights have been very disappointing. If their was an award for worst fight of 2013, it likely would have been Rory MacDonald vs Jake Ellenberger.
Daniel Cormier vs Patrick Cummins
The Good: The UFC did a great job of finding Cummins to replace Rashad Evans and really spin an interesting story out of the whole situation. People are interested in this fight because Cormier seems genuinely pissed off about Cummins accusations. The hype has been pretty exciting for the last nine days, and now we finally get to see Cormier’s 205 pound debut.
The Bad: There is no way around it, this fight is a squash match. All of Cummins’ MMA opponents are a combined 10-20. Cormier is one of the rising stars in the UFC, and it is slightly a shame that we do not get to see him against elite competition.
Ronda Rousey vs Sara McMann
The Good: Everything about this bout is great. Here is a quick rundown of the exciting points of this bout. 1. It is a title fight. 2. It is the first ever Olympian vs Olympian fight in MMA. 3. It is a battle between an elite wrestler and elite judoka. 4. Ronda Rousey is one of the most exciting and polarizing athletes in the sport. 5. Sara McMann has a huge opportunity for a massive upset.
The Bad: The UFC’s terrible marketing of the bout has slightly undermined how great it is.
