Wayne Rooney signs new Manchester United contract

England striker Wayne Rooney has signed a new contract at Manchester United. The new five and a half year deal will see the striker remain at Old Trafford until June 2019, and will pay him $500,000 per week.

The 28-year old forward had just under 18 months remaining on his old contract, which paid $417,000 a week. Rooney’s new contract is the most expensive long-term contract in the club’s history, and will ensure that Rooney will spend the rest of the prime of his career at Old Trafford.

Having been repeatedly linked with a move to Chelsea in both the summer and winter transfer windows, the new contract can be seen as a demonstration that David Moyes not only sees Rooney as vital to his new regime but also that he can keep the best of the current United squad at Old Trafford.

While the club has yet to announce the terms of the contract., BBC Sport have reported that the deal is done. Rooney joined Manchester United in 2004, and has scored 208 goals in 430 games. He needs just 42 more to pass the club record, held by Bobby Charlton.
