Earlier in the offseason, the Baltimore Orioles were linked to slugger Nelson Cruz, but his high price tag eventually forced the Orioles to balk at signing him.
Despite that, the team remained interested in the former Texas Ranger and hoped his price tag would eventually drop.
It has and now it appears the Orioles are nearing a contract with Cruz, this according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
Free agent slugger Nelson Cruz is close to a deal with the Orioles, according to people familiar with the deal.
The Cruz signing, once finalized, would be the second major signing within days for Baltimore, which is obviously going for it now. The Orioles will have one of the better lineups in baseball once Cruz is in the fold.
Cruz was thought to be one of the premier offensive free agents available, but his high salary demands coupled with his PED suspension and draft pick compensation scared teams away.
Given Baltimore already forfeited their first round draft pick by signing Ubaldo Jimenez, the Orioles will only have to give up a second round draft pick to the Texas Rangers – assuming the deal is completed.
