UFC 170 prelims results: Raphael Assuncao and Alexis Davis pick up decision victories

The UFC 170 prelims are underway, and the action is just heating up. Below is coverage of the final two bouts of the Fox Sports 1 prelims. The third bout of the prelims is a Bantamweight clash between Raphael Assuncao and Pedro Munhoz. The main event of the prelims is a pivotal Women’s Bantamweight bout between Jessica Eye and Alexis Davis.

Raphael Assuncao was originally set to face Francisco Rivera tonight, but Rivera was forced to withdraw because of a broken hand. It seemed that the UFC would be forced to pull Assuncao off the card, but they decided to sign former RFA champion, undefeated 10-0 Pedro Munhoz, to take the fight on short notice. This fight has title implications for Assuncao, while Munhoz is a talented prospect looking to spoil the party.

The Davis vs Eye bout has title implications for both women. Many believed Alexis Davis deserved tonight’s Bantamweight title shot against Rousey, but the UFC gave it to McMann. Davis is looking for her third straight UFC victory tonight to cement herself as the #1 contender. Eye has been the focal point of negative press for the past few weeks stemming from her failed drug test post UFC 166. Regardless, this fight could prove to silence the critics if she performs.

Jessica Eye vs Alexis Davis

The fight got off to a quick start as Eye immediately landed a 1-2 and clinched Davis up to the fence. Davis broke out, but ate another combination from Eye. Davis landed a front kick, but got clinched on the fence once again. The ref broke them off the fence after not much action. They clinched again and exchanged strong hooks. Davis got a takedown late in the round, but could not do anything with it. The second round continued with a fast pace in the beginning of the round. Davis was able to secure a takedown and was attacking with a kimura. Davis gave up on it and was able to control Eye on top. The majority of the round Davis was controlling Eye from half guard. The third round had a much slower pace, but Eye was able to pick Davis apart for the first half of the round. Shockingly, Davis did not go for a takedown and Eye was able to land most of her combinations. Davis was definitely holding her own, but she was controlling Eye on the mat. Close fight.
Official Decision: Alexis Davis defeats Jessica Eye by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Raphael Assuncao vs Pedro Munhoz

Assuncao comes out with very technical combinations. Munhoz was attacking Assuncao with leg kicks. Assuncao was definitely getting the better of the striking exchanges. Munhoz was getting countered by Assuncao’s right hook. Solid first round for Assuncao. Round 2 begins with an Assuncao leg kick. Munhoz was opening up on the feet, but Assuncao took him down. Munhoz attacked with a leg lock, but Assuncao got on top and rained down heavy ground and pound. Munhoz fought back to his feet and landed a few more leg kicks. Assuncao got another takedown and again landed heavy ground and pound. Assuncao was connecting on Munhoz to start round 3. Assuncao has controlled the striking all night. Munhoz was not able to get his hands going all night as Assuncao picked him apart. Assuncao got a takedown in the last 10 seconds to put a stamp on his victory.
Official Decision: Raphael Assuncao defeats Pedro Munhoz by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
