Horrible news to report this afternoon as two-time World Champion boxer Antonio Cermeno was kidnapped and killed in his native Venezula, this according to multiple outlets.
Per the Associated Press:
Cermeno, a WBA super bantamweight and featherweight champion in the 1990s, was found shot and killed on Tuesday in a road in the central state of Miranda, said local police chief Eliseo Guzman.
Cermeno and family members were kidnapped in the La Urbina neighborhood in east Caracas on Monday night.
However, his family members were able to escape the kidnappers when they stopped to refuel for gas. Cermeno, for whatever reasons, did not escape and unfortunately was found dead the following morning.
The former boxing great retired in 2006 and finished with a 45-7 record which included two-division World Boxing Association champion belts in both the super bantamweight and featherweight divisions.
It’s currently not known as to why Cermeno was kidnapped, though Venezuela is known for their high crime and kidnappings – something that has scared many Major League Baseball players from playing Winter Ball in the country.
