An exciting Lightweight showdown has been set for UFC 173. Former WEC Lightweight champion, Jamie Varner, takes on James Krause in what is sure to be an entertaining bout.

Varner (21–9–1 (2)) is coming off a knockout loss to Abel Trujillo on short notice back at UFC 169. On the night that the UFC broke their record for most decisions on a card, Varner and Trujillo put on an absolute war for the fans in New Jersey. Varner had Trujillo badly hurt multiple times, but his gas tank failed him after attempting to finish the fight multiple times. As Varner came in swinging, he was hit with a vicious right hook that put him out. Although Varner is incredibly exciting, he is 1-3 in his last four bouts and desperately needs a win here.

Krause (20–5) is coming off a controversial loss to Bobby Green back at UFC Fight for the Troops 3. Green seemingly kicked Krause below the belt three times, but the referee deemed the fight ending blow to be legal, and subsequently ended the fight. It was a sour way for Krause’s 8 fight win streak to end, but he will look for his second UFC victory against Jamie Varner in May.

UFC 173 will go down on May 24th in Las Vegas and is headlined by the UFC Middleweight championship bout between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort.
