Josh Hamilton out 4-5 days with calf strain

Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

With many Major League players, a minor calf strain in February would be no big deal and perhaps no story whatsoever. But when it’s Josh Hamilton? We have to at least take notice.

Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports that Hamilton left practice for the Rangers on Tuesday and will be out for at least 4-5 days.

Hamilton’s physical condition was already a story before the team reported; he gained 20 pounds with hopes of better enduring the long season and then worked with a functional movement coach to optimize his swing. There is a lot riding on this season for Hamilton and the Angels, so starting off with a hiccup is not ideal, especially on the same day that C.J. Wilson took a comeback line drive in the head.

He has plenty of time to get right before the season gets right, but the Angels will hope that he can upgrade his injury status from “week to week” sooner rather than later so that he is ready for Opening Day.
