As defensive backs prepare for Day 6 of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, one of the top safety prospects will be unable to work out because of medical issues. It was reported late Monday night that Northern Illinois safety Jimmie Ward was not cleared by the medical team because of a foot injury.

Ward was training without any discomfort leading up to the combine, so it was a big disappointment for everyone to know he would not be able to take the field.

The good news is that the foot injury is considered minor and Ward should be healthy enough to work out at his Pro Day.

Had Ward been able to take the field, many were expecting him to blow up the on-field drills and put up numbers that would solidify his status behind Alabama’s Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor of Louisville as a top three safety in the 2014 class.

Even though the injury will force him to miss this opportunity in Indianapolis, the buzz surrounding Ward continues to get louder so we would still expect to hear his name called in the second-round of the draft in May.
