Former Oregon State Beavers wide receiver Brandin Cooks walked away from the NFL combine with $100,000 thanks to adidas. The shoe and apparel company offered the large cash prize for the fastest 40-yard dash time recorded at the combine by a player wearing the new adizero 5-Star 40 cleats. Cooks, who led all wide receivers with a time of 4.33 seconds, held on the claim the prize despite a valiant effort by former Rice Owls cornerback Phillip Gaines, who recorded a time of 4.38 seconds.

(And if you’re wondering about Dri Archer, who wowed scouts with a near-record time of 4.26 seconds, know that he wasn’t eligible for the prize because he wasn’t wearing the adidas cleats.)

Gaines did not come away empty handed, though. Since he ran the fastest (in adidas) 40 time in his position group, he was awarded $10,000. I’d say that’s not too shabby for under five seconds of work.
