Josh Gad and Kevin James in Talks to Join Pixels

It would seem as if there is finally some movement towards getting the upcoming film Pixels rolling. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Frozen’s Josh Gad and Grown Up’s actor Kevin James are in talks to join the animated feature.

The film is being based off of a two minute and thirty four second short of the same name by filmmaker Patrick Jean. The short features a number of 1980’s and video game characters bursting out of a television and wreaking havoc on New York City.

Just in case you’ve never seen it, here is a look at the short entitled Pixels by Patrick Jean.

As the pixels touch things in the real world, they are suddenly transformed into blocks. We watch as the Pixels drop down on cabs, and Pac-Man invades the subway system making all the tunnels transform into blocks as well. You even watch as Tetris blocks fall from the sky and land on buildings. Just like in the game, when a Tetris is formed, the blocks disappear. They even show Donkey Kong on the side of a building about to attack with one of his barrels.

This is a fun concept, and I would love to see how the filmmakers plan to expand on the source material.

Right now, the film is being directed by Chris Columbus. Screenwriters Timothy Dowling, who wrote the screenplay for films like This Means War and Role Models, and Tim Herily, who has worked on many Happy Madison productions like Grown Ups 2 and Bedtime Stories and more, have been tasked with writing the script for the film.

All of the above choices make perfect sense considering that the film is a joint effort between Columbia Pictures and Happy Madison Productions.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is being Executive Produced by Patrick Jean himself with Adam Sandler and Jack Giarraputo from Happy Madison, and Benjamin Darras, Johnny Alves, and Matias Boucard from One More Production.

At this point, this film is still in the very early stages of production. It is unknown at this point as to what roles Gad and James would play in the film should those talks translate into deals.

There is no definitive release date at this time, but it is expected that the film will be released some time in 2016.
