With true Spring Training games beginning today, the Anaheim Angels were in a rush to get a deal done with Mike Trout.
They did so as the two sides agreed on a one-year, $1 million dollar deal.
#Angels sign Mike Trout to one-year, $1 million contract. Talks continue on long-term extension.
You’ll likely recall the Angels ruffled some feathers last season (especially Trout’s agent) when they renewed his contract for a paltry $200,000 dollars. However, given the Angels financial situation last year and the hefty contracts they had dished out, they were looking to save money elsewhere.
The ‘raise’ isn’t going to impact his contract extension talks however as the two sides are still apparently negotiating the six or seven year deal, which will reportedly pay Trout upwards of $150 million dollars.
If such a deal is to get done before spring training comes to an end, the Angels will likely hold off on announcing such until after the regular season begins as it will save them money on the luxury tax.
