It is hard to overstate how important John Mayberry is to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2014. With a franchise that arguably has not focused enough on developing a strong farm system and has a number of high profile players on the wrong end of their career (Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, et. al), Mayberry is a young talent who needs to click.
In 2013 Mayberry batted .227/.286/.391 with a .677 OPS. There is no denying his power, but the Phillies need the former first round pick to get on base more to accompany his ability to hit it out of the yard.
That power was on display with his shot off Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Loup on Thursday.
The Phillies will need a whole lot more of this from Mayberry, among other things, if they are going to matter this season.
