Oscars 2014: ABC to live stream Academy Awards for first time ever

In a twist of hilarious irony, ABC has announced that the Oscars — cinema’s biggest night broadcast on television — will be allowing a free live stream of the events online. this means that not only will you need a television to watch the biggest event of the movie year, but you can also legally pirate it for free online and stream it on your laptop or mobile device.

All joking aside, the Oscars are dying for viewership and the free live stream of the Oscars is one way to ensure that a maximum audience is reached. It’s actually a historic event too as never before has the actual Oscar ceremony been available via live stream before — at least not legally.

Per THR.com:

For the first time in Academy Awards history, the ceremony will stream live on WATCH ABC, available online and on mobile devices. The red carpet pre-show and the annual Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Oscars post-show special will also stream on the app.

The kicker in all of that is Jimmy Kimmel Live will be shown through the app’s live stream feature as well, which is also new. Not only will it help boost awareness of the app itself, but Kimmel’s viewership will be maximized as well. Who knows, this could be a turn of the corner for late night television as if Kimmel does well with ratings, it might not be long before more shows like his are live streamed through apps.
