Several familiar faces will square off when the Detroit Red Wings take on the Ottawa Senators later on today. Detroit is home to several Swedish Olympians, including Daniel Alfredsson, Gustav Nyquist and the inured Henrik Zetterberg. On the other side of the ice wearing a different sweater for the first time in a few weeks will be Erik Karlsson.
There’s always a lot of talk about how players will mesh during the Olympics, but it likely works the other way too. If Niklas Kronwall has a chance to crush Karlsson as he skates across the blue line, does he hesitate because the two were teammates just a few days ago?
The goal for the handful of Swedes involved in this contest will be the same: Find a way to get over the crushing loss to Canada in the gold medal game. There’s nothing to be ashamed of with a silver, but the players didn’t sign up for second place.
Oh, there’s also two points in the tight NHL standings on the line, and both teams desperately needs each victory that they can muster. It’s going to be a marathon from here on the playoffs, so a strong start is almost a must.
