Former StrikeForce Middleweight champion and current UFC Middleweight contender, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, underwent surgery today on his elbow to clean out loose bone fragments. After his dominant decision victory over Francis Carmont at UFC Fight Night 36, Jacare admitted that he had an arm injury that almost forced him out of the bout leading up to the fight. Today, he went under the knife to fix the injury.
Jiu Jitsu Pro Gear, one of Jacare’s sponsors, tweeted a picture of Jacare before his procedure:

There is no word as of yet how long the surgery will keep Jacare on the sidelines. Jacare has been on an absolute tear in the last two years. After winning his last three StrikeForce bouts, Jacare moved on to the UFC an defeated three opponents in a row including two impressive finishes over Chris Camozzi and Yushin Okami.
With his win over Carmont, Jacare solidified himself as a contender in the division. He is likely one win away from a UFC Middleweight title shot. It is possible that Jacare and Lyoto Machida battle for the #1 contendership later on this year.
