The Minnesota Wild are in the hunt for a valuable two points while the Edmonton Oilers are back to a familiar role of trying to play spoiler around this time of year.
Edmonton general manager Craig MacTavish once again strongly backed head coach Dallas Eakins despite the team’s abysmal record through the 2013-14 season. For the umpteenth season in a row, the Oilers aren’t contending for a playoff spot. They’re gunning for a lotto spot at the draft.
There’s still some hockey left to play though, and they do tend to start going once the games no longer have any meaning. As such, the mildly shorthanded Wild will need to play a solid contest. Mikko Koivu is close to returning but isn’t quite there yet. Meanwhile, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter will attempt to shake off being a part of the American meltdown in Sochi.
Will these two important players be able to find their respective A-games for the stretch run? Or will the colossal failure overseas weigh them down despite being back home in Minnesota? This contest against Edmonton is as good of a test as any.
