When the Eagles season began last year, everyone was pegging them as taking a quarterback with what seems to likely be a high draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. But something we didn’t all anticipate happened — Chip Kelly’s offense worked and it did so under the guidance of Nick Foles.
Now, not only do the Eagles have a quarterback but they don’t have a big draft pick to cause controversy with. That didn’t stop the team from meeting with Johnny Manziel and thus the rumors about the Eagles being interested in him have once again surfaced. General manager Howie Roseman spoke with Phil Sheridan of ESPN.com to clarify why just they met with Manziel.
“You never know when the opportunity is going to come to get a player,” Roseman said. “It may be now in the draft, it may be in free agency, it may be via trade. If you look at your notes and you haven’t met the guy and the head coach is coming down the hallway and he’s going, ‘Hey, how was this guy when he came out?’ – and you’re kind of going, ‘Help.’”
This doesn’t mean the Eagles will trade up to get Manziel, but it doesn’t mean they’re not still keeping close tabs on him. It’s almost a certainty that the Eagles will not get Manziel, even if he’s on the board for them, but the team is clearly still doing their due diligence.
