The New England Patriots will be in the market for a new safety com the 2014 season (though said player may already be on the roster) after releasing Steve Gregory this morning.

The move will save the Patriots upwards of $3 million dollars – give or take.

"Per agent @davidcanter, Patriots have informed S Steve Gregory he will be released today."

Gregory, an undrafted free agent, was signed by the San Diego Chargers were he spent a few seasons before joining the Patriots in 2012 after signing a three-year deal.

The Patriots and Gregory were able to to get through two years of that deal, but his decline in play and somewhat hefty salary forced the hand of the Patriots who decided to cut ties.

There’s currently no word on where Gregory would be open to playing nor who will help out Devin McCourty on the back end for the Patriots.

Gregory, despite a slippage in play, did rank within the top 25 of NFL safeties – though – I’m not exactly sure that’s something to brag about.
