Despite the in-state rivalry between the two programs, Vanderbilt Commodores head coach Kevin Stallings defended Tennessee Volunteers head coach Cuonzo Martin on Thursday, calling the Tennessee fans clamoring for Martin to be canned “idiots.”
“I think for people to speculate on his job is absurd. Hopefully, the powers that be over at Tennessee will tune those idiots out and give [Martin] the kind of time he deserves to do the job he needs to do.”
Stallings elaborated on the last point, saying athletic departments no longer give coaches enough time to build a winning team:
“It used to be in this business guys got four or five years to show what they could do. The only thing that’s changed is people thinking that they ought to have more of a say in that and then weak athletic administrations giving in to that kind of pressure.”
The Commodores (15-12, 7-8 SEC) will face the Volunteers (17-11, 8-7 SEC) on Saturday. Stallings’ team won the first game between the two schools earlier this season.
