It wasn’t easy by any means, but the 21st-ranked Memphis Tigers completed the difficult season sweep of the defending national champion Louisville Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at home inside the FedEx Forum, 71-66.
Three Tigers starters finished the game in double-figures, led by forward Austin Nichols who wound up with 14 points and five rebounds. Geron Johnson was the overall leading scorer for Memphis with 15 while Chris Crawford dropped in 12 in the monumental win.
For Louisville, Montrezl Harrell did all he could to keep his team in this one, putting in 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds with three steals.
But despite a good effort down the stretch, Memphis was able to hold off their biggest rival in the AAC this season to walk away with the win as the month of March gets underway.
As the regular season quickly comes to a close, the conference that was built out of the remnants of the old Big East is now coming down to the wire, with seemingly no team wanting to step up and grab the brass ring.
