NBA Rumors: Adam Silver fascinated with 'play-in' playoff format

Newly appointed NBA commissioner Adam Silver doesn’t have any immediate plans to change the league’s current playoff format, but if he did – there could be a change for the eighth seed.

Silver is reportedly enamored with the idea of adding a ‘play-in’ tournament for the final playoff spot in the Eastern and Western conferences.

“I’m fascinated with the notion of a play-in tournament.” Adam Silver, on what he’d do if he had to make changes to the playoffs.

Silver actually bringing up the play-in tournament for the 8th seed in each conference. Yes please #SSAC14

Again – it should be noted – this was simply Silver expressing his own view, nothing the NBA is currently implementing (at least nothing we know of).

That said – it would make for great basketball as the eighth/ninth/tenth seeds are often very close in record and we’ve seen the success of Major League Baseball’s new Wild Card play-in format.

It simply gives a few extra teams life for a postseason birth, which is great news for the NBA and their economics.
