NHL Trade Rumors: Anaheim Ducks Could Trade Viktor Fasth

The Anaheim Ducks are the best team in the NHL right now. They have proven that they can hang with the beasts of the Western Conference, such as the Chicago Blackhawks and the St. Louis Blues.

However, that has not stopped trade speculation surrounding their goaltenders. Most of it has been centered around their starting goalie, Jonas Hiller. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and it is unclear if he will re-sign in Anaheim.

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com notes that Ducks General Manager Bob Murray has stated outright that he will not trade Hiller. However, LeBrun notes that a couple of sources have told him that Murray might move another goaltender.

Now, LeBrun also points out that the Ducks would not deal youngsters John Gibson and Frederik Andersen. That only leaves backup Viktor Fasth.

LeBrun also points out that Fasth’s $2.9 million salary is cap-friendly and he has one year left after this season. A team looking for goaltending could definitely look into adding a goaltender like Fasth.

A word of caution though. If the Ducks were to trade Fasth and then Hiller was to leave via free agency in the summer, they would be left with two young goaltenders that might not be ready for full-time starting roles. Gibson is the Ducks’ goalie of the future, however whether that future could begin next season is doubtful.

If the Ducks move Fasth, they had better make sure that they can re-sign Hiller before he can leave.
