Baseball and Allen Iverson? Not exactly the match you probably had in mind, but the Philadelphia Phillies decided to honor the Philadelphia 76ers great today as some members (namely Marlon Byrd) wore Iverson’s famed #3 during batting practice.

Iverson is set to have his jersey retired by the 76ers on Saturday night where current players will not only wear #3 shooting shirts prior to the game, but will also wear a specialized patch on their jersey during the game.

Drafted first overall by the 76ers in 1996 out of Georgetown, A.I. spent parts of twelve seasons with Philadelphia, leading them to the NBA Finals in 2000-2001 – though they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers who were in the midst of their dynasty.

It’s a pretty cool gesture on the part of the Phillies (and Byrd) who despite being a thousand miles away in Florida preparing for the season, wanted to show their support for Iverson and Philadelphia.

Also – complete side note, but how ironic (and slightly hilarious) is the fact that Iverson is being honored at batting practice.
