Jose Fernandez named Marlins Opening Day starter

Some announcements are pretty much understood and just need to be made official.

That is the case for the Miami Marlins and Jose Fernandez. Manager Mike Redmond named the 21-year old his Opening Day starter as the Marlins open the season against the Colorado Rockies, according to MLB.com’s Juan C. Rodriguez.

Fernandez exploded onto the scene last season, winning Rookie of the Year, beating out Yasiel Puig, Shelby Miller, and Hyun-Jin Ryu. He also finished third in the Cy Young voting, posting a 12-6 record with a 2.19 ERA over 28 starts while striking out 187 batters. Fernandez looks to lead the Marlins rotation, which is stacked full of young arms just like his.
