Streak for the Cash Picks-March 2, 2014

I hope the month got off to a good start for you yesterday and you were able to get the greens you were after to get your streak going in the right direction. I was in transit until late and wasn’t able to find wifi in time to get my picks posted, but I’m back for the rest of the month and ready to go streaking!

After yesterday’s 44-pick opening day bonanza, Sunday has a slower but still fascinating board featuring 24 picks. For the first time that I remember, the Academy Awards are featured as picks tonight joining the NHL and NBA to give us our evening options.   There are also NHL and NBA games this afternoon mixed in with a few womens’ college basketball games and a couple early soccer picks from the England.  Here are my picks for the day with a brief rundown, my confidence in each on a scale of 1-10 and my final numbers for February:

3/2 Picks

9:00- Manchester City: City faces Sunderland in the FA Cup Final where they are heavily favored to get the win.  This will be City’s second straight trip to the finals after being upset last year by Wigan Athletic.  It’s still early enough that we get a few “gift” picks on Streak, and this should be one with City -700 to win.  It wouldn’t be the biggest upset in Streak history, but it does make Man City a solid pick. Confidence-8

11:30- Tottenham Hotspur wins by 2+ Goals: Spurs come in scuffling a bit and reportedly battling for their Manager’s job as they host Cardiff City.  Cardiff lost to Tottenham earlier this but just 1-0 on their home picks. Cardiff has really been struggling and have tumbled into the relegation zone after their 4-0 loss at home to Hull last week.  Giving the goal is never a great option, but Cardiff is in such poor form I’ll do it in this pick. Confidence-6

12:30- Washington Capitals: The Caps knocked off the Bruins in Boston yesterday and now host the Flyers who won at home over the Rangers yesterday.  Both teams could show signs of fatigue from back-to-back games, but with the rest many got over the Olympic break, I think it should be a pretty good game.  Washington has taken two of three in the season series, and since they’re at home coming off a big win, I think they’ll get the win here as well. Confidence-4

1:00- North Carolina Tar Heels: UNC hosts their rival Duke in this Women’s College Basketball game that is the final game for the regular season. UNC has dropped their last two games but did beat the Dukies earlier this year on the road.  This should be a close one, so stay away if possible. If I had to pick, I’d go with UNC since they are at home. Confidence-3

1:00- Maryland Terrapins: The Terps head to the Littlejohn Colliseum to face the Clemson Tigers who have dropped four of their last six.  Maryland is also having a tough year and have lost three of their last four. However, all four were to ranked teams and they played very well in their last three games which were a two-point loss at Duke, an 11-point win over Wake Forest, and a two-point loss to Syracuse on Monday.  I think they’ll go on the road and get the green here. Confidence-5

1:40- Rory McIlroy: Even though this always seems to be the “any other golfer” side of these props wins, I’ll go with Rory and his two-stroke lead and the Honda Classic which is an event he’s won in the past. Confidence-6

2:00- Purdue Boilermakers: Much like UNC, Purdue finishes their regular season against a division rival at home who they’ve beaten on the road and who is ranked slightly better than them. In another tough call, I’ll stick with the home team. Confidence-3 1/2

2:05- Villanova wins by Double Digits: Marquette is good at home, but this game is at Villanova where the Wildcats are favored by 11. Confidence-5

2:30- South Carolina Gamecocks: SC goes on the road to take on the Lady Vols in the first meeting of the season between these two teams who sit atop the SEC standings heading into the postseason.  Both teams are playing well, but Tennessee lost their last home game to a ranked team and are just 1-3 at home against ranked opponents this season. Confidence- 3

Mar 1, 2014; Uniondale, NY, USA; the New Jersey Devils celebrate a goal against New York Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov (20) during the second period of a game at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

3:00- New Jersey Devils: The Devils host San Jose who is coming off a tough loss in Buffalo as they fell to the Sabres.  New Jersey, on the other hand, has been playing great since the Olympic Break with a pair of wins by convincing margins (5-2, 6-1).  The Sharks are a really strong home team but won’t be home, so I’ll take the red-hot Devils. Confidence-5

3:00- New York Islanders: The Islanders were on the other end of the Devils 6-1 win yesterday and now host Florida who is coming off a 6-3 loss in Columbus last night. With the Panthers playing back-to-back road games and winless since the break, I’ll go with the Islanders to get a somewhat-rare home win. Confidence- 4 1/2

4:00- Vancouver Canucks: Ottawa is struggling as they come into the Heritage Classic which will take place at BC Place Stadium. Hockey outdoors is always cool, but the Canucks and Senators both need the points for their playoff run. Vancouver has looked a little better since crashing into the Olympic break, so look for them to get the win here over their fellow-Canadiens. Confidence-5 1/2

4:00- Golden State Warriors: The Warriors are two-point road favorites as they head to Toronto to take on the Raptors.  Golden State’s Stephen Curry has great career numbers against Toronto and the Warriors are playing well on the this road trip where they have won two of three on the trip and five of six overall. Kyle Lowry may also be limited or miss the game for the Raptors. Confidence-4

4:00- Ohio State Buckeyes: As they travel to Indiana, OSU is only favored by 2 1/2 due to all their recent road woes in conference play. I think they’ll get the win since the Hoosiers are in a bit of a down year and OSU has won six of eight and had a three game winning streak before falling to Penn State. Confidence-5

6:02- Georgia Tech wins or Single Digit Loss: In this ACC clash, the Seminoles host the Yellow Jackets.  Florida State has played mostly close games this season, while Georgia Tech have kept their last three road losses to five points or less. Confidence-3

7:00- San Antonio Spurs: At home against their in-state rival Dallas Mavericks, the Spurs are five and a half point favorites.  They could get Tony Parker back for this one and they’ve beaten Dallas in each of their two meetings this season. Confidence-7

7:00- Boston Bruins: Both these teams played yesterday and didn’t have great results–The B’s fell behind early to the Capitals at home and weren’t able to come back while the Rangers fell on the road to the Flyers. Boston has won both previous games in this series this season, and I think they’ll again show their resilience as they get the road win in this one. Confidence-5

8:00- Colorado Avalanche: In this big game between two teams that it would seem are headed to the playoffs.  Tampa won the earlier game at home but they’ve dropped four of their last six road games while the Avs have been great at home all season. Confidence-4

8:00- Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks are always good at home and this season are 23-5-2 at the Pond.  They’ll host the Hurricanes who have dropped four in a row and have failed to scored a power play goad in their last eight road games.  Carolina may be desperate and pull off the upset, but it’s far more likely the Ducks cruise at home. Confidence-7

Feb 26, 2014; Tucson, AZ, USA; Arizona Wildcats guard Nick Johnson (13) talks to forward Aaron Gordon (11) on the bench during the second half against the California Golden Bears at McKale Center. Arizona won 87-59. Mandatory Credit: Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

8:05- Arizona wins by double-digits: Arizona won huge over Cal in their last game and has been playing well at home as the host Stanford who gave them a three-point game in Palo Alto earlier this season.  At home, the Wildcats have won their last three by double digits. Confidence-5

11:15- Matthew McConaughey: Confidence-6

11:25- 12 Years a Slave: I definitely would agree that these picks aren’t sports, but I still think they’re fun and add some nice variety. That being said, the odds make both these strong favorites so go with them if you are in the red or looking to throw a quick streak up for the start of the new week. Confidence-4
