Before they ever set foot on the floor in Stillwater, Oklahoma against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Kansas Jayhawks had clinched yet another outright Big 12 title. Unfortunately for KU, they weren’t able to escape with a road win in a tough environment, but even with that, they have the resume to stay in the #1 spot this week.
Coming in behind the Jayhawks, there is a defined “2nd-class”, but each of the teams has been moving around in recent weeks. Iowa State was the victim of a road loss against Kansas State over the weekend, but there is no shame in dropping a game in Manhattan, and the Cyclones are a darling of the advanced metrics.
Oklahoma, Texas, and the aforementioned KSU Wildcats are bunched up behind Kansas and ISU, and each has a compelling resume. The Sooners took the Longhorns apart over the weekend (77-65 final score) while KSU was beating Iowa State, but just over a week ago, the Sooners outlasted the Wildcats in Norman, giving them the upper hand.
Marcus Smart and Oklahoma State returned with a vengeance in their win over Kansas, and suddenly, the Pokes have won three straight after their well-documented 7-game losing streak. There is a real argument for OSU to be higher on this list given that they are near full-strength again, but they’ll have another opportunity to improve their positioning with a tough upcoming schedule that includes a home game against Kansas State before a road trip to Iowa State.
Without further ado, it’s time to unveil this week’s rankings, and by all means, feel free to flame us in the comments.
