The Indianapolis Colts want to retain Vontae Davis and the feeling appears to be mutual, but the two sides have yet to come to an agreement on a contract extension.

That has lead some to believe that the Colts will use the franchise tag on Davis, but according to CBS Sports that won’t be the case.

"The Colts will not franchise cornerback Vontae Davis if a deal is not struck prior to the tagging deadline Monday at 4 p.m. ET, according to a league source.Davis is Indianapolis’ top corner, with the size, physicality and coverage skills coach Chuck Pagano prizes and the team is continuing efforts to sign him long term. Those efforts will continue until March 11, but the tag will not be applied, the source said."

As mentioned, the two sides will continue to hammer out an extension and unlike some of the other previously mentioned scenarios, Davis and the Colts seem eager to work something out.

Of course, there could always be sangs moving forward but the lack of a franchise tag doesn’t mean Davis won’t be returning to the Colts unlike other situations going on around the NFL.
