The New England Patriots have their franchise tag still available with a few hours left before the deadline passes, but don’t expect them to use it. Especially don’t expect them to use it on linebacker Brandon Spikes, as after a so-so season between the two sides, it appears that no contract talks are underway before Spikes is set to be released.

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Spikes hasn’t heard from the Patriots this offseason and the team has made no indication that they’ll be reaching out to the linebacker before he hits the open market.

"This shouldn’t be a surprise, but there’s little reason to believe Brandon Spikes will ever play again for the Patriots. The two sides haven’t spoken about a new deal this offseason, according to a source. So, unless something drastically changes, Spikes’ days with the Patriots are over. He’ll hit free agency March 11."

New England was expected to move on from Spikes this offseason, so the lack of interaction between the two sides is hardly shocking. Spikes is still a serviceable linebacker, he just wore out his welcome with the Patriots and will be looking to revive his career elsewhere in the NFL this offseason.
