It seems everyone is finally getting into the spirit of Trade Deadline season. After the blockbuster trade between the Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues, the Florida Panthers have gotten into the fray. However, it’s not what you might expect.
With the position the Panthers are in, you would expect them to be on the selling side of things. However, in their first trade of deadline season, the Panthers are the team that have acquired the principal piece of the deal. They did so by acquiring center Brandon Pirri from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2014 NHL Draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Renaud Lavoie points this out on Twitter yesterday.
“Brandon is a young and talented player who we are extremely pleased to have acquired… He has experienced tremendous success on the American Hockey League level, being named MVP of the All-Star game and winning the league’s scoring title. Pirri further adds to our depth at center along with Aleksander Barkov, Nick Bjugstad and Drew Shore. We look forward to his contributions to our team.”
With Pirri added to it, that is a group of centers who are young and will make the Panthers better as they get better. The Panthers might be bottom-feeders right now, but in a couple of years all the development time will have paid off.
Now, Pirri has gotten his wish and now we will see what he can do with an improving Panthers team.
