Dong Hyun Kim has broken into the top 10 in the official UFC Welterweight rankings. Kim, who previously was at #11 in the rankings, moved up to the 10th spot with his spinning elbow KO victory over John Hathaway this past weekend.
Here are the Welterweight rankings as they stand now:
Kim’s career seemed to be on the downward trajectory in 2011 and 2012. Kim was a point fighter, grinding his way to decisions against opponents who could not get up out of his top game. In seven of his ten UFC victories, Kim won by way of decision.
After three decision victories sandwiched by a freak injury that resulted in a loss to Demian Maia, Kim’s career had seemingly plateaued. When the UFC booked him against Welterweight prospect, Erick Silva, the overwhelming majority believed that Kim was being fed to the lions. Instead, Kim unleashed a new found aggression, and pulled off one of the most shocking and violent KO’s of 2013.
He followed up that performance with an even more jaw dropping KO this past weekend in the main event of the TUF: China Finale over John Hathaway. Kim attested his new found KO power to a more aggressive fighting style. He said that his prior wins did not garner him any support for a title shot, so he realized he would have to start finishing fights to get recognized. Now that he is in the top 10, the sky’s the limit for Dong Hyun Kim.
