UFC 173 is already a stacked card, and a late announcement last night has ignited the card with some Heavyweight action. Former UFC Heavyweight champion, Junior Dos Santos, is set to take on rising prospect Stipe Miocic in the co-main event of the evening.
The original co-main event was set to be the gargantuan battle between bitter rivals, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva. The UFC realized the potential of that fight to be a main event on it’s own, and it was moved to a separate Fox Sports 1 card. Losing the Sonnen/Silva fight was seemingly a big blow to the card, but the UFC has done a great job to replace the bout with an integral Heavyweight bout.
Dos Santos will return to the Octagon for the first time since losing the Heavyweight title rubber match to Cain Velasquez back at UFC 166. Dos Santos was once again dominated by Cain by five rounds, but refused to be taken out. Ultimately, Velasquez finished Dos Santos in the fifth and final round in a bout that could have been stopped much earlier. Dos Santos will look to get back to his winning ways when he takes on Miocic in May.
Miocic has looked great in the UFC thus far, going 5-1 in the Heavyweight division and defeating the likes of Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga. After losing to Stefan Struve in 2012, Miocic bounced back and picked up two decision victories. A win over Dos Santos in May could have him knocking on the door for a UFC title shot.
Here is the entire UFC 173 card as of now:
