Watching Albert Pujols run was a painful affair for any spectator last season. It looked like each step was an exercise in pain tolerance for the slugger. One can only imagine, then, what it actually felt like for Pujols himself.
It was easy to forget was a solid defender Pujols has been throughout his career during those struggles. And we shouldn’t forget, of course, that Pujols once played outfield and third base in his big league career.
Those days are well behind him, but Pujols has shown during spring training that he can still make great plays over at first now that he’s healthy (video from MLB.com):
Ultimately the Angels only care about what Pujols does at the plate but solid defense at first is still a plus, especially given Mark Trumbo’s departure in a trade this off-season.
