The Kansas City Royals received some gut wrenching news on Wednesday morning when they learned that pitcher Luke Hochevar had suffered a sprained UCL.
The injury is expected to sideline him for a minimum of two months, but it’s not so much the sprain that has the Royals concerned as it is the possibility it may lead to a possible Tommy John surgery.
Luke Hochevar has a sprained UCL. He’ll be shut down for at least two weeks. The team hopes he returns by the end of May.
While there’s no word of any Tommy Johns surgery at the moment from the Royals, we’ve seen many pitchers initially diagnosed with the sprained UCL, only to experience a lack of healing and be forced to undergo surgery.
Hopefully both the Royals and Hochevar will avoid such a dilemma and he’ll be back by the end of May/early June.
This all but ends any bid Hochevar was hoping to find within the Royals starting rotation as Yordano Ventura will likely take over the spot – at least for now.
