SMU adds Steve Broussard to coaching staff

The Southern Methodist Mustangs added a new face to head coach June Jones’ coaching staff Tuesday, hiring UCLA Bruins running backs coach Steve Broussard.

The Bruins excelled on the ground under Broussard’s tutelage. During the 2012 season, UCLA running back James Franklin was named a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, rushing for 1,734 yards. Even after Franklin departed for the NFL, the Bruins didn’t see a dip in the production of their ground game, finishing the 2013 season ranked 35th in the country at 196.62 rushing yards per game. In contrast, the Mustangs, at 119th in the country, rushed for only 93.75 yards per game last season.

While it’s unlikely the Mustangs will transform their pass-happy offense next season — June Jones is the head coach, after all — Broussard’s addition to the staff may help create a more balanced attack.
