When Xavier big man Matt Stainbrook exited Monday’s game against Seton Hall with an apparent knee injury, many people surrounding the program feared the worst, but the returns on Stainbrook’s diagnosis came back positive.
Xavier’s Matt Stainbrook is out for Thursday’s game vs. Villanova with an MCL strain, per the school. Day to day after that.

Stainbrook’s prospects for return this season are markedly better than expected, and according to his sentiments from Tuesday, his target date for return is the start of the Big East Tournament.
Just caught up with a very cheerful and optimistic Matt Stainbrook. He said he hopes to return for the Big East tournament. #Xavier

Currently, the Musketeers are slotted in as a #9 seed according to ESPN’s “Bracketology” projections (hat-tip to Joe Lunardi), but they are certainly not the same team without Stainbrook on the floor. The junior center is the team’s leading rebounder at 7.8 boards per game, and he is one of three players on the team averaging in double figures at 10.6 points per contest.
There is a sentiment that Xavier desperately needs to avoid a 1st-round exit in the Big East Tournament, and if Stainbrook can get back for that match-up, it would be a huge boost to Chris Mack’s club.
