2014 NFL Draft Rumors: New York Jets interested in Sammy Watkins?

The New York Jets are in dire need of some help in the wide receiver department, which leads most to speculate that the team might use their first round draft pick at no. 18 this coming May on a wideout. Undoubtedly, Clemson’s Sammy Watkins is the most coveted of the group this year, and Jets head coach Rex Ryan knows this, however he–like the rest of us–doesn’t believe Watkins will make it to him and his team.

“But there’€™s no way he’ll be there,” Ryan told the Associated Press, according to nypost.com. In an interview with Watkins after his workout, NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock told Watkins that Ryan said if he did happen to fall, “he ain’t getting to 19.”

If Ryan was really that impressed with Watkins at his Pro Day on Thursday, there’s always the possibility that the team could trade up from the 18 spot to grab the former Tigers star, an idea that has already been thrown around in regards to the Detroit Lions, who are equally as impressed as everyone else.

In the end, though, Ryan and the Jets may just have to hope that either Mike Evans drops to them, or they could steal away Brandin Cooks in that opening round.

We should still Cooks 18 pick if he still there second round get Jordan Matthews third round we should get a te that could block ( we can always teach him how to catch it will make our running game 1000 times better) all the other rounds use on defense I can see us pick a linebacker with the fourth round please tell me what you think

I’m hoping TE in the first, CB or safety in the second, OLB and OL in the third, WR in the 4th and 5th. I don’t see there being a necessity to draft high WRs, we’re not a win now team anymore, and the FA market should allow for an adequate supply of WR talent. As I said before though, Idzik has the luxury of going about this draft in any order he chooses. Its a draft deep in talent at many of the positions the Jets have needs, and that’s a great for a team needing an influx of youth and talent!

I know what you’re talking about with te but I cant see us draft a defensive player in the secondary round and 3rd round know we need help on offense we need playmakers do you see how good the draf class for receivers are

        • Paul Newbold

Yep, the wide receiver group in this class runs deep, thus there really is no hurry. I see them making a run at two wide receivers during FA. IF they can land two quality veterans, their need to grab one of the top prospects is diminished, giving them more flexibility, they can wait, grab value later on and allow them to develop under veteran leadership. Its one of the scenarios they can take. With 12 picks and cap space to spare, the Jets have the luxury to go in almost any direction they want! It’ll be an interesting year to watch Idzik and Co. rework the roster.

I agree They could go many routes I hope they take a receiver in free agent to match up what someone we get out the Draft I would like to see Sanders, cooks, Nelson and Jordan Matthews I think our offense will be unstoppable all we need is at least one wide receiver to make this work but like you say there are many routes we could take I would love our offense to be a little bit younger though

No trade up for the Jets this year. The price to trade up to get Watkins is way too high for a team trying to develop into a play off team. Idzik, from his remarks will take the best player on the boar at #18. If that is truly the case, as it was last season, Idzik might shock the world and not go offense at all. I’d like Ebron at #18, if available. However the Jets are sitting in a great position with multiple picks…….any pick they make shouldn’t surprise!
