Beer Review of the Week:

Boulevard Brewing’s Tasting Room Mid-Coast IPA

Growing up just an hour from Kansas City, Boulevard became one of my favorite micro breweries in college even before I knew what a micro brewery was. Their “Tasting Room” series is a collection of test beers that Boulevard is trying out for possible release. They currently have sample 12 packs out that include their staple, Boulevard Wheat, as well as a couple of test beers. When I read the label description of this one I was sure it would be too strong for my liking. The Mid-Coast IPA (Indian Pale Ale) is advertised at 104 IBUs (a bitterness rating). For non-beer enthusiasts, a rating over 50 is pretty high, over 100 is crazy (a Bud Light would be around 10). However, I was so expecting an almost painful bitterness, that when it was just a little strong for my liking, I was pleasantly surprised. There are tastes of pine and grapefruit that “hopaholics” will likely enjoy, but if the thought of bitter hop tastes like that don’t appeal to you, you’ll want to skip this one. Speaking as someone that is usually only “so-so” on IPAs, I actually found this to be pretty refreshing. There is some malty sweetness to it to balance the hops a little and then the high carbonation mixed with the citrus hops make it as drinkable as any 104 IBU beer can be. This might not be for the beer novices, but experienced craft beer drinkers should give it a try.

My Rating (1-10): 7

A Way To Pass The Time This Week:

Normally this space is reserved for something to help you take your mind off the fact that football is still months away and while I could try and come up with something, let’s be honest, free agency kicks off in just a few more days and that’s all any NFL fan can think about. So go nuts. Make up your free agent wish list, follow the latest rumors on Twitter, and enjoy one of the most exciting periods of the NFL offseason.

Rant Of The Week:

Enough with winter already!

I love the first snow of the year. I love the first time my kids get to go out and make a snow man or go sledding. Those are priceless memories that I love to share with them. The problem is, that “whimsical winter wonderland” lost its charm about two months ago. Now snow just sucks. It’s cold, wet, it makes me have to get up earlier to clean off my car and drive about 2/3 my regular speed. I hate snow! Especially snow accompanied by -20 degree wind chill. It’s March now for crying out loud!!!! It’s almost Spring Break!!! Spring Break activities shouldn’t include shoveling your drive way. I shouldn’t have to put on my eskimo coat and hat and gloves to run to the store in March. It’s just not right. I’m done with it. No more. Wake the stupid ground hog back up and keep pestering him until he…..(I’ll be honest, I can’t remember if seeing his shadow means more winter or not, but whatever means that winter is over, bug him until we get that result). I’m to the point where I’m wondering what I can do to the environment to help cause a little global warming. Couldn’t we all go for a little global warming about now? I know I sure could.

That does it for this week’s Armchair Quarterback. Come back next week for part two of the draft position analysis. In the mean time, enjoy the start of free agency. I hope your team gets just the player you’re hoping for (unless it’s someone I want the Chiefs to sign).
