It appears free agent starting pitcher Ervin Santana is playing hardball.
The talented former Kansas City Royals arm had allegedly been seeking a $100 million dollar contract when the offseason began, but has had to drop his asking price and now is reportedly looking to secure a $50 million dollar deal.
It’s still a hefty dollar sum for Santana which is likely a large reason Santana is still in the free agent pool, but multiple teams remain in contact with him – this according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
Free agent pitcher Ervin Santana’s agents remain in contact with the newly aggressive Orioles and at least four more teams as Santana continues to work out in Scottsdale, Ariz. — not far from 15 different spring camps — and also to maintain his resolve, say people close to him.
The Mariners, Rockies, Rangers and Jays are among other teams to remain in contact with Santana, who’s been described by personal friends as “cool, calm and collected” by nature.
The Orioles already signed fellow starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, who like Santana, overvalued himself this offseason.
