Wide receiver Robert Meachem has been on the decline over the course of the last two seasons as he approaches his 30th birthday, but that won’t stop the New Orleans Saints from at least giving an attempt at signing the pending free agent when he hits the open market next week.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints and Meachem have had “some initial talks” about a new contract.

While the initial talks may still be there, don’t expect the Saints to rush into signing Meachem.

If they could get him locked in to a small deal then it would be an option worth considering, but there are plenty of more productive and cheaper receivers the Saints could bring in to town if Meachem’s demands are too high.

Last season, Meachem had just 16 catches for 324 yards and 2 touchdowns.
