The HBO Original Series True Detective has undoubtedly been one of the most engaging shows on television right now. Over the course of the season, the show has built up a very dedicated fanbase who has spent quite a large amount of time trying to figure out just who the murderer is that Rust and Cohle spent all those years pursuing.
Fans have come up with all sorts of theories; some entirely possible, and others well…not so much.
One of the most obvious theories is that the Yellow King is actually Detective Rust Cohle. Anyone who has watched the show, even if only for an episode or two, know that Cohle’s character is quite different than all the other detectives on the show.
He always speaks very prophetically and about the strangest of topics, something that his partner Martin Hart has tried to get him to stop doing on numerous occasions. Also, as you have seen from his living situation, he doesn’t really have much to his name. After losing his daughter and his marriage, he was left with not much more than four walls, a bed, and a collection of books; however, does this really make him a killer?
The other theory floating around is that the Yellow King is Martin Hart. This may seem little further out there than the thought of Cohle being the murderer; however, Hart’s life has been turned upside down as of late, and it would not be too farfetched to think that something could have caused him to snap.
However, a group known as Big Meeting is certain they know just who the “Yellow King” may be. This may be one of those things you just have to see for yourself.
**WARNING** There is strong language contained in this video. Of course, if you have been watching True Detective, you are probably used to this, but in any case, if you are offended by such things, or are in a situation like work where such things may not be appropriate, you may not want to click play. Otherwise, enjoy!
As I said before, the video was released by a group calling themselves Big Meeting. The clip was written and produced by David Sidorov, JJ Shebesta, and Rachel Wenitsky.
Now obviously, we know that this “theory” is probably the furthest thing in the world from seriousness; however, it does a good job of parodying the extreme level of obsession that some fans have demonstrated going over every single inch of film and trying to analyze the show shot by shot to figure out who the murderer really is before the big reveal.
Who do you think the Yellow King really is? Fortunately, we won’t have to speculate much longer.
The True Detective Season Finale airs on Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
