Michael Sam turned down White House Correspondents dinner to focus on NFL Draft

The whirlwind of attention that surrounded and still surrounds Michael Sam has brought new opportunities to the future of Missouri standout Michael Sam. But while Sam’s coming out as gay in February propelled him onto the national stage, he’s really only interested in one opportunity and that’s to play football in the NFL.

Sam is so committed to playing in the NFL that he’s recently declined an invitation to attend the glitzy White House Correspondents Dinner so that he can train for the draft. He also believes that it would send the wrong message nd wants to accomplish something professionally before taking such an invitation.

Per USA Today:

“We respectfully declined,” Bragman said. “As much fun as I would have had and he would have had going, it sends the wrong message. If he gets on a team and plays well, he’ll probably be invited next year. I don’t want people to think that he’s interested in anything other than getting ready for the draft.”

The White House Correspondents Dinner is a big deal as some of the most influential and powerful people in the country are on the guest list. Sam is no doubt an important American figure, and he’s become even more important by declining a dinner he doesn’t think he’s yet earned.
