Depending on who you ask, you’d probably get different reasons as to why the Cleveland Indians were giving catcher Carlos Santana run a third base.
Some might suggest they’re trying to lighten the workload/save Santana from injury given the physical nature of being a human backstop, others may suggest it’s Santana attempting to get out of the catcher position.
Whatever the reasoning behind it, it’s apparently not working as Santana reportedly looks ‘stiff and uncomfortable‘ at the hot corner.
No. 1, Santana hasn’t gotten a lot of chances. No. 2, when he has gotten a chance, he’s looked stiff and uncomfortable. Maybe things will improve when he starts playing two or three games in a row.
You don’t exactly need to be in the most prime physical condition to play third base (Pablo Sandoval does so just fine) but you do need to be quick on your feet.
Santana’s attempt to play third baseball doesn’t look to be dead in the water just yet, though if things don’t improve, he might be nothing more than an emergency option moving forward.
