The drama surrounding the Minnesota Vikings quarterback situation didn’t last very long as the team has already found the guy they want before free agency even officially (or unofficially) opens. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Minnesota Vikings have decided to re-sign Matt Cassel for the 2014 season.

The move means that the Vikings are likely out of the running for other veteran quarterbacks in free agency and it also means that teams like the Texans or Buccaneers who were eyeing Cassel now need to consider other options.

It’s not that Cassel is going to be the quarterback of the future for the Vikings, but he knows the system and is clearly well liked by the front office. Cassel will be taking not he mentoring role with whoever the Vikings draft this May and while he’s not going to be in the job forever, he’s likely going to start the 2014 season as Minnesota’s starter.
