Backup quarterbacks scored a major win in 2013 when the likes of Josh McCown in Chicago and the lack of someone like him in Green Bay proved that the guy backing up your starter is almost as important as the starter himself. Where the Bears soared, the Packers nearly crumbled thanks to having no backup quarterback of value.
Shaun Hill is a fellow NFC North backup but his days with the Detroit Lions are over and he’s on the prowl for another team to take him on as a veteran backup. Jason La Canfora from CBSSports believes that the San Francisco 49ers or Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be a logical landing spot for Hill in free agency.
He is a competent veteran quarterback and he’s held in high regard. With a quality coaching staff like the 49ers have, this makes sense. He would be a nice complement to Kaepernick and he is going to end up with one of these teams in need for a veteran. Maybe it ends up being Tampa. That wouldn’t surprise me at all, either. But I could see him going with Jim Harbaugh.
Hill has been a solid backup and knows how to fill in when he has to and mentor when he needs to. Backing up Kaepernick won’t afford him the opportunity to start he’ll get in Tampa, but playing under Jim Harbaugh isn’t the worst thing for a quarterback to wish for.
