The Seattle Sehawks reportedly want to retain defensive end Michael Bennett, but they may face competition from their divisional foe, the San Francisco 49ers.
That’s the word from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio who suggests San Francisco could get into a bidding war with the Seahawks over Bennett.
Last month, it was reported that the Seahawks will re-sign defensive end Michael Bennett. They haven’t. As of tomorrow, he officially can negotiate with other teams.
The negotiations already are occurring, discreetly and hypothetically. Some believe that the 49ers will make a run at Bennett, which would in one fell swoop help the Niners and hurt their chief rivals for supremacy in the division, the conference, and the league.
Of course, the 49ers aren’t exactly overflowing with cap space and have their own issues to deal with so it’s completely within reason to believe they’re attempting to drive Bennett’s price up so he’ll depart Seattle in free agency.
Add in that Bennett isn’t a fit in San Francisco’s scheme and that the 49ers are relatively strong at his position, it’s certainly a bit of an odd fit.
