Perhaps in response to Cole Hamels’ injury, perhaps in response to shaky outings by A.J. Burnett and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, the Phillies are now reported to be asking about Ervin Santana.
The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo first reported that the Phillies were asking about the free agent 30-year old starter. Santana would provide immediate help in the rotation, especially by taking some pressure off of the Cuban defector Gonzalez, who has not looked especially sharp in his first competitive action in two years. With A.J. Burnett getting lit up in Friday’s Spring Training game against the Orioles, Ruben Amaro, Jr. could be looking to add another arm between Cliff Lee and Burnett. Cole Hamels is sidelined with tendinitis and will start the season on the disabled list.
Ervin Santana recently has been rumored to have fired his agent and could end up representing himself in free agent discussions. Santana’s other problem comes in that his asking price has not come down from approximately four-years and $50 million.
